I find it difficult to remember everything, just like most people. If you ask me what day is Christmas or New Years I can tell you, but if you were to ask me what day Columbus Day, Memorial Day, my anniversary or even Flag Day is I do good to remember the month-if that.
When I woke up today upon checking my e-mails and the other routine sites I visit I was reminded that today is Flag Day, I probably would have gone the day never knowing any differently if it were not shown to me. In a society where we are constantly bombarded with information and our lives revolve around such busy schedules, reflection is something we rarely have time for, but this morning I did just that, I made time to reflect upon Flag Day and felt a little ashamed that it is not a day that I know by memory.
My father served over 30 years in the Navy and my grandfathers served, my uncles served and even my grandmother served, I have cousins who are currently serving, I am proud of what they have done and what all soldiers do and have done. I am proud of what our flag represents, Freedom. Their sacrifice has allowed me to achieve dreams I could not have without them and I am forever grateful, I am grateful for those who are serving this morning, though I may not know where they are or what they are doing I know they are there. Today I will try to keep this mentality with me, I will try to notice our flag today where ever it is hanging instead of glancing over it because it has become overly familiar to me, today I will remind myself what it means to be an American.
